Performs duties involved in the performance of clinical MRI exams, including but not limited to patient screening for MRI safety, patient positioning, and coil and protocol selection.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
*1. Prepares and positions patients for MRI of various parts of the body. Positioning includes setting up equipment (coils, monitoring devices, etc.) and patient in relation to each other to provide best demonstration of body part under study.
*2. Screens patients and personnel for any ferrous metal implants or other object, including credit cards and all potential missiles. Ensures that no patient/visitor/healthcare worker enters scan room with ferromagnetic objects or contraindicated implants.
*3. Based on protocols established by physician, selects appropriate pulse sequences from monitoring console for scan procedures. Accurately records all pulse sequences implemented for exam. May recommend changes in protocol or additional instructions to provide additional diagnostic information.
*4. Evaluates results of scanning procedure for quality of results and completeness. Manipulates images through use of console keyboard and mouse to display to physician. Recognizes problems and rectifies with respect to selection made of operation.
*5. Sends images to PACS system, evaluates exam for completeness, and verifies exam in a timely manner. Develops a working knowledge of all PACS capabilities.
*6. Performs daily Quality Assurance tests on equipment.
*7. Monitors proper level of cryogens to ensure integrity of magnet.
*8. Informs Radiology Manager or Supervisor and appropriate service personnel of system problems and documents accurately and completely.
*9. As required, participates in the quality assurance program.
*10. Seeks advice from appropriate resource when unsure of protocol or policy.
*11. Explains procedures in a clear and concise manner without causing unnecessary anxiety. Listens to and answers patient's questions with patience and courtesy. If unable to answer questions, finds resource that can.
*12. Starts and intravenous line on patients requiring IV contrast for the MRI examination with consideration to patient's pain tolerance, anxieties and fears. Monitors patient for contrast reactions and reports any problems promptly to a radiologist, the code team, or both, as indicated.
*13. Edits computer entries for correctness of description, reason for exam, and charges for billing in hospital computer system.
*14. Participates in continued educational activities both during and outside of normal working hours.
*15. Performs other duties as assigned/required.

COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS:
Candidate must be able to cover assigned shift, on-call hours as well as weekend rotation. Candidate must be able to meet all requirements of MRI job description. Candidate must have ongoing continuing education in MRI and MRI Safety. Must be able to speak, read, write and understand the English language to effectively communicate with predominantly English-speaking population.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
Candidate must be registered by the ARRT in Magnetic resonance imaging, at least one year of experience preferred. BLS required.
Minimum of one (1) year patient care related experience required. One (1) year MRI experience preferred.
