This position conducts registration and obtains financial reimbursement for patients accessing laboratory services at medical facilities. This person also ensures that information is accurately entered into laboratory systems to support effective specimen processing, billing and result distribution. Reviews all account information to optimize collection efforts and system recording events to expedite reimbursement and compliance; resolves issues as they arise to promote point of service decisions. Explains and obtains signatures on hospital legal forms i.e. Conditions of Admission and Advanced Beneficiary Notice. Contributes to the effective operation of clerical and customer support functions within the laboratory by verifying patient demographics, preparing reference lab specimens for transport, ensuring accurate and timely delivery of results to physician offices and responding to customer inquiries and requests. Requires knowledge of both registration functions and systems as well as basic knowledge of laboratory testing.
May be assigned to a variety of admitting, registration and customer service work. Performs pre-registration/registration processes for both patients and specimens, verifies insurance coverage and obtains authorizations and notifications. Accurately and completely documents all information into the patient records system and laboratory information system to ensure maximum reimbursement, timely billing and proper result distribution.
Reviews quick-registrations of others when applicable and verifies patient demographics. Posts miscellaneous/esoteric lab charges, as needed. Performs receptionist and clerical duties as necessary to support operational needs of laboratory departments.
May calculate patient liability according to verification of insurance benefits, collects and deposits co-payments and accepts/post credit card payments.
Prepares send out specimens for transport to reference laboratories. This includes, but is not limited to, ordering, packaging, entering results, maintaining and communicating correct test information and distribution of results.
Demonstrates a high level of customer service by answering, routing and documenting incoming calls, faxes and emails in an accurate and timely manner. Ensures that pertinent information is shared with physicians and their office staff, patients, visitors, coworkers and department management. Prioritizes tasks, works under pressure to meet deadlines and to accommodate a fluctuating work load. Ensures that all reports are accurately scanned into applicable EMR. Maintains adequate level of office supplies and appropriate requisitions- reorders when necessary.
High school diploma/GED or equivalent working knowledge.
Requires work skills in customer service and financial transactions as normally developed over one or more years of related work experience.
Requires the ability to build familiarity with medical terminology and an understanding of all common insurance and payor types. Accurate and efficient keyboarding skills, and the ability to work effectively with common office software are required. Must have highly developed interpersonal skills and communications skills, with a strong customer service orientation.
Previous laboratory registration and/or billing experience preferred.Previous medical, financial services and/or customer service work experience preferred.
Additional related education and/or experience preferred.
