The position is responsible for examining human body cells to detect evidence of cancer or other diseases. Examine specimens using microscopes to evaluate specimen quality, detect abnormal hormone conditions, detect abnormalities in the color, shape, or size of cellular components and patterns. Examine cell samples to prepare and analyze samples, such as Papanicolaou (PAP) smear body fluids and fine needle aspirations (FNAs), to detect abnormal conditions. Reports analysis of slides with unusual cell structures to pathologist.
Requires a bachelor's degree, certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists as a Cytotechnologist CT (ASCP), and 2 years of experience in the field or in a related area. Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field.
