Directs the personnel, operational and financial activities of outpatient oncology services at the Sinai-Grace Hospital Cancer and Blood Disorders Treatment Center. Responsible for researching, developing and implementing, in collaboration with the medical staff, a blood disorders center, specifically beginning with the needs of our population, which would be Sickle Cell Anemia. Responsible for the coordination of continuum of care services for both blood disorder and oncology patients, cancer treatment outcomes, increasing referrals to inpatient and outpatient oncology programs, and integrating research with clinical practices. Responsible for developing and overseeing the daily operation of the physician based practices within the center. Assumes responsibility for all leadership staff in the center who manages the daily operations of the SGH Cancer and Blood Disorders Treatment Center, including clerical scheduling, charging and coding; infusion therapy, including chemotherapey treatment; and radiation therapy. Responsible for all support services within the center including, but not limited to, community outreach, social work, dietary services, clinical trials and physics. Assumes responsibility for meeting all documentation requirements to maximize reimbursement and meet regulatory requirements by assuring the outpatient EMR meets all standards and requirements. Identifies the need for policy development and/or revision, defines policies in collaboration with administration and the strategic plan of SGH and the DMC. Oversees or directs the development, implementation and/or revision of department procedures/protocols in accordance with system-wide goals and objectives. Approves procedures/protocols and/or seeks other departmental approvals as appropriate. Develops, monitors and revises functional processes in accordance with system-wide goals and objectives. Assumes responsibility for aligning SGH with other oncology departments within the DMC to meet the strategic goals of the oncology and blood disorders service line. Provides input into the development and revision of organizational structure for service. Approves personnel actions such as hires, fires, disciplines, etc. Ensures the timely completion of performance appraisals. Develops current to intermediate goals and measures for the department and assures that these goals align with the strategic plan. Measures and assesses performance. As requested, assists in long range goals and strategies for growth and development. Works in collaboration with the VP and the finance department with the development of the budget and adherence to the budget. Assumes responsibility for budget variances and responsibility for developing action plans to correct variances.
Monitors activities for and ensures compliance with laws, government regulations, TJC and CMS requirements and DMC policies. As directed, implements external and internal audit recommendations. Ensures hospital departments achieve objectives for diversity of their suppliers.
1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Three years of laboratory experience, including a minimum of one year of pathology laboratory experience (histology, gross room, etc.).
3. Previous experience overseeing or directing the work of others is strongly preferred.
1. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills necessary to work with a variety of employees and physicians; the ability to work independently as well as a member of a team.
2. Leadership skills to provide necessary guidance to staff, including training, trouble shooting, and problem solving, and the flexibility to provide necessary support for all team members.
3. Extensive knowledge of Anatomic Pathology processes to train others, resolve problems, and accurately trouble shoot issues within these areas within the scope of the role.
4. Manual dexterity, visual and aural acuity to operate and utilize standard office equipment such as a computer, histology and pathology equipment, telephone, etc.
5. Reading skills to verify accuracy of pathology information.
6. Strong customer service skills.
