Description Research Assistant I Rheumatology JOB SUMMARY: We are seeking a laboratory assistant who is interested in investigating the immune system in autoimmune diseases. The lab studies both humans and small animal (mouse) models of Type 1 Diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and lupus. Experiments are carried on the cell and molecules of the immune system that are culprits in these diseases. Flow cytometry is used to characterize details on different types of T and B lymphocytes. Assistance is needed in purifying and preparing cells with reagents that identify these subsets. Opportunity is present to learn flow cytometry and microscopic imaging techniques. Animal husbandry of mice is an important part of the laboratory. Training will include genetic testing of mice to detect the presence of specific genes, blood sugar monitoring, and arthritis scoring. Our friendly laboratory has trainees at different levels and all are willing to teach and share, so bring your willingness to work and desire to learn about the immune system and we will make sure you have the opportunity to be your best.
Standard procedures plus:
Counting and staining cells and data analysis for flow cytometry.
Counting and staining cells for microscopy.
Enzyme linked immunoassay for antibodies.
Tissue culture techniques.
Small animal (mouse) dissection.
