| Incumbent is an experienced, full-performance level Ultrasound Technologist, performing examinations of the abdomen, retroperitoneal (including bladder), thyroid, testes, aorta and Carotid arteries and a variety of other vascular studies. These exams are highly dependent on the skill and experience of the technologist. The purpose of these exams is to achieve diagnostic studies to bring about proper diagnosis and treatment. Major Duties include but are not limited: a. Performs all available diagnostic ultrasound studies involving the application of high frequency sound waves to humans for the diagnosis of disease. Examinations may consist of imaging studies for visualization and determination of organ position, form, structure and physical consistency. b. Interacts constantly between the patient and equipment during examinations, adjusting amplitude and the position of the probe on the patient's body in response to the technologist's instantaneous recognition of the image being produced. Recognizes specific diagnostic patterns during the test to be able to perform a proper and complete examination. c. Works closely with the Radiologist to ensure complete and accurate patient scans. Consults immediately when necessary with the Radiologist to avoid incomplete examinations. d. Secures the confidence and cooperation of patients during procedures. Independently explains procedures, positions patients for desired results, providing cushions as appropriate. Ensures appropriate technique to avoid unnecessary discomfort, tissue damage, etc. Monitors patient's condition and vital signs. Takes immediate action when patient's condition indicates undue stress, trauma or other adverse symptoms indicating onset of complications. e. Receives and understands requests or instructions for routine and very difficult procedures. Understands and carries out the requests made by physicians or seeks assistance of the supervisor when an uncommon, unique or new procedure is required. Interprets requests or instructions from physician when no clear precedent exists. f. Uses an in-depth knowledge of location and function of major body organs and structures related to the specialized field in which the employee works to obtains desired results in specialized or complicated procedures where no standard instructions exist. g. Recognizes adequate results or re-accomplishes the procedure. Suggests different procedures or tests if re-accomplishing same procedure is unlikely to produce adequate results. Provides comprehensive rationale, including patient anomalies that require deviation from standard or prescribed treatment. h. Assist with the scheduling of patients for examinations, registers patients for examinations, and case edits examinations to ensure that reports will go to completion and cancels examinations where appropriate. Evaluates the nature of critical and emergency procedures and arranges patient priority to accommodate them, coordinating appointments with other services. Facilitates unit processes by working in collaboration with department members, physicians, other providers and hospital employees to ensure that tasks are completed. i. Provides guidance and technical direction necessary for accomplishment of exams and the workload. j. Demonstrates use, purpose and care of equipment and accompanying accessories. An experienced senior technologist, assures the work effort of radiology professionals as well as other hospital professional and support service staff are coordinated and carried out. k. Operates, calibrates, and maintains medical instruments or equipment used to assist with or perform routine or repetitive diagnostic procedures. Recognizes abnormalities during procedures and brings them to the attention of the appropriate physician. Sends digital images to PACS for interpretation and maintains records of patients treated, examinations performed, scans taken, etc. l. Orders and maintains supplies for the unit, in accordance with standard procedures. Assists with requests for equipment and supplies. Operates and maintains medical instruments or equipment used to assist with or perform standard diagnostic procedures. m. Serves as technical expert in the operation, calibration and maintenance of specialized medical equipment and instruments. Sets up all necessary accessories or supplies and advises other medical personnel of new equipment, accessories or supplies. Transports equipment to areas where needed. Ensures proper cleaning and/or sterilization of equipment after its use. Performs minor maintenance and adjustments. n. Works with digital imaging and Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS), scanning worksheets into the Radiological (PACS) medical record. Technical expertise requires proper patient/image identification and sending images to the correct patient record using Worklist and other electronic/technical applications. o. Reviews new developments in the ultrasound/radiological fields and recommends to the lead technologist (Ultrasound Service), staff Radiologists, and the Service Chief, adoption of those which would improve the operation of the Service.
