This position is located in the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service at the VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System, in Reno, NV. The work is a combination of phlebotomy duties and moderate complexity testing under the supervision of a supervisor or medical technologist in the outpatient, inpatient and CBOC locations. Phlebotomy duties are a major component of this position, duties include but are not limited to the following: * Able to meet the established Phlebotomy draw standard of performing a minimum of (8) patent draws per hour (during peak hours) * Provide accurate specimen collection instructions to patients (e.g. clean catch urine collection, stool for O&P, 24 hour urine collection, etc. ) * Knowledge of proper phlebotomy techniques and use of equipment and supplies. * Responsible for knowing and following all laboratory safety requirements. * Enforces laboratory safety requirements. * Able to handle situation of patient syncope and/or disruptive behavior according to facility and laboratory policy and procedures. * Receives and accesses samples. * Able to pack specimens and label outer packaging in accordance with all IATA and DOT regulations. * Centrifuge, sort, prepare appropriate aliquot sample tubes, and deliver appropriate samples for in house testing to appropriate testing areas. * Maintains all necessary files and records for phlebotomy quality assurance programs. * Incumbent must be proficient and competent in computer operations. * Able to identify and/or troubleshoot problems with test results and test kit reagents. * Performs daily, weekly, monthly, and as needed maintenance procedures for all instrument based waived testing as required by laboratory and manufacture guidelines. * Quality control testing is required to be performed and appropriately documented.
