Medical Technician performs work in a clinical laboratory providing a range of diagnostic functions to include blood-drawing procedures, assisting patients and specimen processing. Medical Technician provides primary support for the laboratory. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to: Verifying proper patient preparation, specimen collection, and specimen transport requirement for reference laboratory tests; Greeting patients, checking their lab test requests ordered by the Provider in VISTA/CPRS, appropriately accessioning/printing labels for test requests, labeling specimen containers with correct patient identification, and providing other correct collection containers along with both written and verbal instructions for collection; Securing the confidence and the cooperation of the patients during phlebotomy procedures; Performing blood-drawing duties in a courteous manner; Performing clerical duties such as: Answering the telephone for requests of laboratory information from professional staff, patients, and their family members with excellent customer service skills; Assisting patients in wheelchairs or other movement problems during and after the collection of laboratory specimens; Educating patients on proper collection techniques for specialty test such as 24-hour Urine, Mid-Stream Urine, and Fasting Lipid; Be attentive to details to correctly identify and correct any discrepancy related to patient identification, specimen labeling and specimen acceptability; Observing universal precautions and use of proper PPE according to universal precautions policies and procedures; Performing a variety of technical and clerical duties related to receipt, processing, preparation of specimens and procurement using phlebotomy skills; Printing computer-generated labels with accessions numbers; and Performing other duties as assigned.
