Provides all aspects of patient care management of outpatients and inpatients in Radiation Oncology at GWUH. Performs a variety of functions within the scope of practice of Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants. This role serves as a liaison for all disciplines and services interfacing with the Radiation Oncology. The NP /PA will be credentialed according to the medical staff regulations of the GWU hospital and will be under the supervision of an appropriately credentialed Radiation Oncology attending physician.
A masters degree in nursing and completion of an approved course of study as a nurse practitioner.
Current ANCC certification and D.C. licensure as a NP is necessary. Preferred ONS/ONCC Radiation Therapy Certificate, OCN Certificate, or similar credential.

Develops, implements, and evaluates the clinical collaborative practice agreements in the specific clinical area.
Conducts health assessments of patients/families with real or potential, acute, and /or chronic health problems. Initiates referrals to specialty services and fosters continuity of care.
Initiates selected therapeutic and diagnostic procedures, consultation and laboratory examinations. Prescribes and revise medical regimes. Interprets findings and plans of care according to collaborative practice agreements and protocols in the designated areas.
Participates in team meetings and conferences to enhance aninterdisciplinary approach to primary healthcare delivery. Serves on departmental and multidisciplinary committees, which influence or determine policies affecting practice.
Based on diagnosis, counsels patient and/or family regarding illness and supplies patient, and/or family with appropriate teaching and educational material.
Directs patient and/or family to agencies dealing with specific illnesses/diseases.
Develops patient visit notes to referring physician when applicable.
Completes hospital rounds each day for physicians' patients as needed and documents patient encounter.
Participates in approved medical and nursing research studies.
Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Must be able to communicate providing verbal feedback in a professional manner.
Must be able to follow and understand instructions, and react favorably in all work situations.
Must have strong interpersonal skills and be mentally adaptable and flexible in dealing with a variety of people at various levels within and outside the Hospital, physicians, and University.
Must be able to do math calculations and input data into the computer.
General supervision is received weekly to monthly from the designated Team Lead and the Chief, Hospital-Based NP/PA, GWU Hospital.
Functional supervision may be exercised over professional nurses.
