Learn more The White River Junction VA Medical Center in Vermont is seeking a Lead Medical Technologist to join our Pathology and Laboratory Team. Facilitates team or unit processes by working in collaboration with team members to ensure that tasks, priorities, goals and achievements are coordinated with management. Responsible for all aspects of operation in their area of specialty including preparation and maintenance of records and reports, analysis of testing methodologies, training, instrumentation and compliance. Acts as a liaison to other departments of the medical center for the Microbiology section. An MT/CLS at this level develops, performs, evaluates, interprets, correlates, and validates the accuracy of laboratory procedures and results. Testing procedures are performed on a variety of biological specimens and/or environmental samples using manual or automated techniques, and require a broad exercise of independent judgment and responsibility with minimal technical supervision. The work performed can include a variety of laboratory disciplines, such as bacteriology, chemistry (including endocrinology and toxicology), coagulation, hematology, immunology, immunohematology (blood banking), and urinalysis. Such positions include requirements to monitor quality control systems and measures; collaborate in the diagnosis and treatment of patients; and provide education for laboratory and other healthcare professionals, and others in the medical center setting including the public. Serves as a lead Medical Technologist in Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Service, assigned to the Microbiology departments and assists in Phlebotomy. Responsibilities include performing a variety of procedure including complex analysis and infrequently requested tests, evaluating abnormal results in these sections, using and maintaining equipment and implementing and monitoring quality control. Assignment requires occasionally working alone. The individual in this position will oversee preparation of procedures and comparative analysis for new methodologies. For each new test this will require the use of complex statistical analyses for validation of the test methodology, establishment of local reference ranges, establishment of linearity limits, and preparation of all statistical data for presentation and review and approval by the supervisor and ultimately presentation to the Laboratory Director for final approval to utilize the test for patients. The focus will be on evaluation of quality control, quality assurance, and include projected workload statistics. Responsible for ensuring that specialized expendables and reagents used daily in the Microbiology department are monitored and ordered in a timely manner to prevent shortages and consequent delays in testing. This includes daily detailed monitoring of calibrators, controls, linearity materials and reagents for over 100 different tests performed in the microbiology laboratory to include maximizing utilization for cost effectiveness, monitoring lot numbers for use in order of expiration, and ensuring proper procedures are followed to ensure acceptable performance of new lots prior to use for patient testing. Serves as Microbiology Supervisor when the Microbiology Supervisor is absent and makes appropriate work assignments to assure completion of the workload. Serves as the first line resource for technical information for staff medical technologists, medical technicians and customers in all areas supervised by the Microbiology Supervisor. The quality control development, instrument set-up and maintenance, and method protocol are responsibilities of this position as assigned. This position requires knowledge in reference laboratory testing, processing specimens, investigating requirements and reference ranges for esoteric tests sent to other facilities. Prepares reagents and controls, sets up and calibrates instruments, performs and calculates results for a variety of tests in all sections.
