JOB SUMMARY:
The Medical Lab Scientist is responsible for performing complex laboratory tests on blood, body fluids, cells, and tissues. Scientists will identify bacteria, parasites, and other microorganisms, analyze chemical content of fluids, and cross match blood for transfusion and organ transplantation, as well as aseptically prepare cells for use in cellular therapies. The results of these tests are used in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease.
The Automated Testing Laboratory is a high-volume, fully automated lab that uses the Cobas 8000 modular analyzer series and automated track.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or Clinical Laboratory Science required.
MLS (ASCP) – Medical Laboratory Scientist, American Society of Clinical Pathology, CLT (HHS) Clinical Laboratory Technologist, Health and Human Services Certification, and/or category specific technologist certifications offered by the American Society of Pathology such as BB (ASCP), C(ASCP), H(ASCP), M(ASCP), and MB(ASCP) required.
Must be ASCP Certified within one year of employment at the Penn State Hershey Department of Pathology.
Good customer service and communication skills required
Must be self-motivated and able to prioritize work.
Applicants trained outside of the United States must provide documentation of equivalency evaluation of their education and training to ensure it is equivalent to CLIA requirements. The equivalency evaluations will be performed by a nationally recognized organization. Ex: National Association Credential Evaluations Services, Inc. (NACES), the Association of International Credential Evaluators, Inc. (AICE). The applicants is responsible for paying the cost of the equivalency evaluation.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Laboratory experience in a hospital setting preferred

Able to stand frequently, walk frequently, sit constantly.
Able to lift/carry 0-20 lbs frequently; 21-50 lbs occasionally.
Able to push 0-50 lbs occasionally.
Able to pull 0-20 lbs frequently; 21-50 lbs occasionally.
Able to climb occasionally, reach constantly.
Able to use hands for simple/firm grasping.
