The Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory in the Department of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center is seeking a full-time Clinical Variant Scientist.
We offer a next generation sequencing (NGS) panel for the detection of molecular alterations associated with myeloid malignancies as an in-house clinical test. Our lab serves Vanderbilt University Medical Center and several satellite locations in middle Tennessee.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
*Use a variety of software tools to accurately analyze and classify somatic variants identified by clinical NGS testing
*Read and interpret scientific literature with curation of relevant findings in a clear, concise, and accurate manner
*Summarize NGS findings to generate high quality variant interpretations and clinical report drafts
*Provide oversight for bioinformatic processing and storage of clinical NGS data files
*Perform critical quality control functions to comply with quality management programs and standard operating procedures for interpretation of clinical NGS data
*Support improvements for current work processes
*Actively participate in laboratory quality control and clinical review meetings
*Actively participate in training of clinical molecular fellows, pathology residents, medical students, and genetic counseling students
*As appropriate, participate in research studies and manuscript development related to clinical NGS findings
Position qualifications:
Required:
Master's Degree (or equivalent degree) in molecular biology, human genetics, or a related field and < 1 year experience (more than at least 1 year of experience desired)
Preferred:
*MS or PhD degree in Cancer Genetics, Human Genetics, or Biological Sciences
*Prior experience with somatic variant interpretation in a diagnostic laboratory, including familiarity with human mutation databases, genome browsers, and HGVS nomenclature
*Detail-oriented with excellent written and verbal communication skills
*Ability to follow established protocols with accuracy
*Ability to work in both individual and group settings
*Flexibility to adjust priorities according to workload or management needs
*This position is available with a start date of July 1st, 2023. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled. A fully remote work arrangement is possible with this position.
