Overview
The Casual EKG Technician performs and assists with cardiopulmonary diagnostic procedures, including obtaining high-quality EKGs. The role involves primarily routine, repetitive tasks but requires sound judgment when identifying potentially life-threatening arrhythmias and the ability to prioritize workload as needed. The technician also supports respiratory services by completing oxygen rounds, transporting oxygen cylinders, performing pulse oximetry spot checks under the direction of a Respiratory Therapist or Technician, maintaining respiratory supplies, and assembling/disassembling equipment for sterilization or disinfection. Strong teamwork, safety awareness, and effective communication are essential to this role. As a Casual employee, your schedule will assist in filling the needs of the department.
Responsibilities
Perform high-quality EKG tracings that are free from baseline drift, muscle tremor, and A-C interface artifact.
Recognize poor-quality or unacceptable tracings and take appropriate action, including aborting and repeating EKGs when necessary.
Work efficiently and effectively as a Cardiac Procedure Technician (CPT) in accordance with departmental standards.
Accurately gather patient data and enter EKG charges in the appropriate systems.
Maintain strict adherence to biohazard safety protocols, including proper disposal of blood collection equipment.
Utilize the pneumatic tube system and manually deliver specimens to the main laboratory as required.
Clean, disinfect, and sterilize all equipment used in patient care following established infection control guidelines.
Maintain par levels of supplies in storage areas and nursing units.
Routinely offer assistance to other team members and contribute to a collaborative work environment.
Communicate effectively and professionally with patients, co-workers, and other members of the healthcare team.
Demonstrate a positive attitude, cooperation, and commitment to teamwork in daily interactions.
Qualifications
Prior experience performing EKGs preferred.
Knowledge of EKG equipment, tracings, and quality standards.
Strong attention to detail and ability to follow safety and infection control protocols.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
